Placenta Encapsulation

Types Of Placenta Encapsulation

We offer two types of placenta encapsulation: the TMC version, which follows traditional Chinese medicine practices, and a freeze-dried placenta service. Here’s a brief video explaining the differences between the two options to help you decide which one is right for you..

Your Body Grew Something Extraordinary

The placenta spent nine months nourishing your baby — filtering nutrients, producing hormones, and regulating everything from oxygen to immunity. After birth, many families choose to honor that work by returning those nutrients to the body that created them.

Placenta encapsulation is the process of carefully preparing your placenta into capsules you take during the postpartum period. Many mothers report faster physical recovery, more stable mood, improved energy, and better milk supply — especially in those demanding first weeks when your body is working hard to heal and feed your baby.

"The postpartum period is one of the most physically and emotionally demanding transitions a person can experience. Encapsulation is one way to give your body every possible advantage going in."

— Tayna Chessman, LM, CPM, SoCal Doulas

Energy Support

Iron and B vitamins in the placenta may help combat postpartum fatigue during the fourth trimester.

🧠

Mood Stability

Hormones like progesterone and estrogen preserved in capsules may support emotional balance post-birth.

🍼

Milk Supply

Many mothers report increased milk production when taking placenta capsules in the early postpartum period.

💪

Physical Recovery

Stem cells, growth factors, and oxytocin in the placenta may support faster healing and uterine recovery.

Why Families Choose Encapsulation

The Benefits
A note on benefits: Placenta encapsulation is a wellness practice with a long history in traditional medicine. While many families report significant benefits, the scientific research is still developing. The benefits below reflect what mothers commonly experience — and what traditional practices have long documented. Always consult your healthcare provider if you have specific medical questions.

Combats Postpartum Fatigue

The placenta is rich in iron — a mineral that drops significantly after blood loss during delivery. Replenishing iron through encapsulation may reduce the deep exhaustion many new mothers experience in the days and weeks following birth.

🌸

Hormonal Balance & Mood Support

Estrogen, progesterone, and cortisol plummet after birth — a biological trigger for baby blues and, in some cases, postpartum depression. Placenta capsules contain these hormones in bioavailable form, which may help soften the hormonal cliff many mothers experience.

🍼

Breast Milk Production

Prolactin — the primary milk-production hormone — is found in the placenta. Many encapsulation clients report a noticeable increase in milk supply, particularly in the early days when supply is being established and demand is highest.

🩹

Faster Physical Recovery

The placenta contains oxytocin, stem cells, and growth factors that may support uterine contractions, tissue repair, and overall healing. Whether recovering from a vaginal birth or cesarean, these nutrients may help your body bounce back more efficiently.

😴

Sleep & Stress Resilience

CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone) in the placenta plays a role in regulating stress response. Returning this hormone during the demanding newborn period may support your nervous system's ability to cope with the sleep deprivation and sensory overload of new parenthood.

💜

Rooted in Tradition

Placentophagy — consuming the placenta postpartum — has roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine dating back centuries. The practice of encapsulation is a modern, accessible version of an ancient tradition honored across many cultures worldwide as a way of supporting maternal recovery.

Preparation Methods

TCM vs. Freeze Dried

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Warming · Gentle · Balanced

The TCM method involves steaming the placenta — optionally with warming herbs like ginger and lemon — followed by gentle dehydration, grinding into powder, and encapsulation. This process focuses on restoring warmth and energy, supporting hormonal balance, and returning the body to a centered state after the "opening" of birth.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine philosophy, birth leaves the body in a "cold" and depleted state. The warming preparation is designed to counteract this by bringing heat and nourishment back into the body — which is why ginger and lemon are often used in the steaming process.

Best for: Families drawn to traditional approaches, those who prefer a gentler preparation, and anyone with a history of feeling cold or depleted after birth.

Freeze Dried Method

Maximum Potency · Raw · No Heat Exposure

Freeze drying involves carefully cleaning, slicing, and freeze-drying the placenta in its raw form — without any steaming or heat-based preparation. This method skips the steaming process entirely to preserve up to 95% of the placenta's natural hormones, enzymes, and nutrients — giving you the most bioavailable and potent version possible.

Because no heat is applied, the delicate hormones and growth factors that can be degraded by the steaming process remain fully intact. For families who want maximum hormonal benefit, this is the highest-potency preparation available.

Best for: Families seeking maximum potency and hormonal preservation, those who prefer no herbal intervention, and anyone who wants the most bioavailable preparation available.
Important note for GBS-positive clients: If you test positive for Group B Strep (GBS), your placenta must be steamed before encapsulation for safe consumption. This means GBS-positive clients will need to choose either the TCM method or the Freeze Dried method with steaming. Please let us know your GBS status when booking so we can prepare accordingly.

Common Questions

FAQs
It comes down to philosophy and priority. If you're drawn to traditional approaches and appreciate the warming, balancing nature of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the TCM method is a beautiful choice. If your priority is maximum hormone and nutrient preservation — and you prefer no herbal intervention — the Freeze Dried method preserves up to 95% of your placenta's natural compounds and offers the highest potency available. The Vital Bloom Package combines the freeze-dried method with additional healing products for the most complete postpartum support bundle we offer.
Yes, but with an important modification. GBS-positive clients must have their placenta steamed before encapsulation for safe consumption. This means the fully raw freeze-dried method is not appropriate — your preparation will include a steaming step. Please let us know your GBS status at the time of booking so we can plan your preparation accordingly. The TCM method (which includes steaming) is always appropriate for GBS-positive clients.
Typically within 2–3 days of your placenta being picked up. We work efficiently because we know the early postpartum period is exactly when you need your capsules most. The cooler is dropped off before your due date so the collection process is seamless — your care team or partner simply follows the clear instructions included with the cooler.
The placenta tincture is a small portion of your placenta preserved in alcohol — shelf-stable for years. Unlike capsules (which are typically used up in the first 6–12 weeks), the tincture offers long-term hormonal support you can use for years to come: during weaning, perimenopause, high-stress periods, or any time you feel your body could use an extra boost. It's one of the most unique and lasting elements of the Vital Bloom Package.
The 8-ounce healing balm included in the Vital Bloom Package is infused with herbs and placenta powder, making it a versatile topical healing product. It's designed for perineal healing after vaginal birth, soothing cesarean scars, and can also be used on baby's delicate skin. Many families continue using it well beyond the immediate postpartum period for general skin healing and nourishment.
Yes — many SoCal Doulas families bundle encapsulation with their birth or postpartum doula service. It simplifies coordination since your doula already knows your birth plan and hospital. Reach out through our contact page or book a free discovery call to discuss combining services.
