Build a career you're proud of — with the infrastructure to back it up
SoCal Doulas is a fully managed doula agency in Southern California. We handle insurance billing, credentialing, client acquisition, and backup — so you can focus entirely on the families you serve.
A Note From the Founders
This isn't a corporation. It started with two people trying to build something that actually works for doulas.
We're Tayna and Ifeanyi Chessman — the founders of SoCal Doulas. Tayna is a Licensed Midwife, Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula, and ProDoula Certified Trainer. Ifeanyi brings a background in maternity health and the operational systems that keep everything running. Together we built something we genuinely believe in — and we want to be real with you about what it is before you apply.
Like most doulas, Tayna spent years juggling on-call life while trying to market herself, figure out billing, and handle all the behind-the-scenes work that nobody warned her about when she started this work. Over time we built systems and relationships that made things easier — especially around insurance billing, client referrals, and administrative infrastructure. And then we realized something: a lot of doulas are locked out of real opportunities not because they're not good enough, but because the systems are complicated and closed off.
So instead of keeping those resources to ourselves, we opened the door. That's how SoCal Doulas grew — not as a corporation, but as a community of doulas working together so we can all build sustainable careers while supporting families well. If you're reading this thinking it sounds like something that might actually work for your life, we'd genuinely love to hear from you.
"A lot of doulas are locked out of real opportunities because the systems are complicated and closed off. We built SoCal Doulas to change that."

The Infrastructure Most Doulas Spend Years Trying to Build — Ready on Day One
When you join SoCal Doulas you're not getting a lead and a good luck. You're joining a fully managed agency with real systems, real backup, and real income potential built in from the start.
Insurance Billing
Instant credentialing under our contracts
The moment you join you have immediate access to bill Medi-Cal, Kaiser, IEHP, Blue Shield Promise, Health Net, and Community Health Group under our existing provider contracts. No months of credentialing paperwork. You're billing on day one.
Client Acquisition
Vetted inquiries — not cold leads
SoCal Doulas handles all client acquisition, marketing, and intake. You receive qualified inquiries from families who are ready to work with a doula. Active team members support approximately four clients per month — the load that supports $62–72K annually.
Backup System
Real backup — built into how we work
Because all clients are SoCal Doulas clients, our internal backup system is seamless. You're never on call alone. When you need coverage there's a vetted, trusted team member ready — no scrambling, no awkward last-minute arrangements.
Your Own Clients
Bring your private clients too
Have existing clients who want to use their insurance? You can bring them onto our platform. We provide billing and administrative infrastructure for your private clients at a flat rate per client — so you can offer professional insurance processing without managing your own contracts.
Who We're Looking For
We welcome doulas from a variety of backgrounds and experience levels. ProDoula certification is preferred — and if you need training, Tayna offers ProDoula labor and postpartum certification programs in person and virtually. What matters most is who you are and how you show up for families.
Compassionate
You genuinely care about families and approach birth work with presence, warmth, and full attention.
Reliable
Families and teammates can count on you. You show up, communicate, and follow through.
Professional
You carry yourself well in clinical settings, with families, and with other members of the care team.
Non-Judgmental
You support families in their choices — epidural or unmedicated, cesarean or VBAC — without agenda.
Collaborative
You thrive in a team environment and believe everyone does better when we work together.
ProDoula Preferred
ProDoula certification is preferred for insurance billing eligibility. Not certified yet? Ask us about training.

Common Questions
Do I keep my independence or do I work exclusively for SoCal Doulas?
You maintain your independence. You work with clients referred through our system while controlling your own schedule and availability. You can also continue building your own private client base alongside your SoCal Doulas work — and bring those private clients onto our billing platform if they want to use their insurance.
What does the pay structure look like?
Active team members supporting approximately four clients per month typically earn between $62,000 and $72,000 annually. Specific compensation details are discussed during your onboarding conversation — the structure varies depending on whether clients are insurance-covered or private pay, and whether you bring your own clients or work exclusively with SoCal Doulas referrals.
I'm not ProDoula certified — can I still apply?
ProDoula certification is preferred because it's required for Medi-Cal billing eligibility — and insurance-covered clients are a significant part of what makes the income numbers possible. If you're not currently certified, Tayna offers labor and postpartum doula training in-person in Southern California and virtually. Many team members trained with Tayna before joining. Reach out and we can talk through the pathway.
What happens if I need backup coverage for a birth?
Because all SoCal Doulas clients are agency clients, our backup system works seamlessly. Families are introduced to the concept of backup as part of the agency model from the beginning — so there's no awkward conversation when you need it. You have access to a vetted team of doulas who know the clients and the agency standards. You're never scrambling alone at 2am.
What areas do you serve and do I need to be local?
SoCal Doulas serves Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles counties. Most team members are based in Southern California, but geography within the region is flexible depending on where clients are located. If you're in a neighboring area reach out and we'll talk through coverage zones.
